A few years back I went birthday shopping down London’s famous Denmark Street looking for a high-end acoustic ukulele. I completely fell in love with a beautiful Kala ASOV-S model, crafted with a solid spruce top and ovangkol back and sides.
While average ukuleles work perfectly well for basic strumming, they often suffer from string buzz and patchy intonation when you pluck individual notes. This instrument was entirely different..it produced a remarkably sweet, rich, and warm tone.
My goal with
MG Sweet Uke was to capture that delicate acoustic magic in a fingerpicking style. I wanted to create a VST sample library that feels truly intuitive to play. Instead of focusing on chords, I meticulously recorded every single note to ensure solo lines sound fluid, consistent, and deeply expressive.

- Boutique Signal Chain: I recorded each note using my trusty Neumann TLM-193 condenser microphone, to capture the true acoustic warmth of the wood.
- Natural Dynamics: The main notes feature 3 velocity layers and 3x round-robins to avoid any synthetic, repetitive sound.
- Fluid Legato: I scripted custom, automatic slurs (2x round-robins for hammer-ons and pull-offs) that trigger naturally when you overlap notes.
- Extended Range: I took the liberty of digitally stretching the lowest natural note (C3) down a full octave, extending the range of the ukulele.
- Custom Scripting: Every line of code under the bonnet is tailored to make the instrument react dynamically to the touch.
