I made a video on my Youtube channel showing how I sampled the sounds from my kitchen lights and turned them into a unique virtual instrument. In the video you can see the entire process, from recording the light samples to setting things up in Kontakt. The end result is a beautiful and expressive bell-type instrument you can download for free and use in your own music productions.
MG Kitchen Lights is built on the natural, metallic pitch variations of physical resonant objects. Because these organic surfaces naturally wobble and fluctuate slightly in pitch, the instrument possesses an inherent acoustic charm and warmth that you simply cannot replicate with synthesis.
To make the library highly responsive and dynamic under your fingers, the sampling engine utilises a deeply detailed structure:
- Two Beater Types: Switch seamlessly between a soft mallet for a warm, tactile tone, and a hard mallet for a sharp, crystalline attack.
- 3 Velocity Layers: Meticulously balanced between quiet, medium, and loud performance layers.
- 7x Round-Robins: Every single velocity layer features seven distinct recorded variations per note.
The core samples have been carefully mapped out and their range extended. While the original source provided two to three octaves of coverage, stretching the samples into the higher register yields a beautiful, glassy, xylophone-like quality that cuts cleanly through a mix.
The custom script interface provides a clean set of dials to shape your sound instantly:
-
- Beater Switch: Instantly toggle between the Soft and Hard beater profiles.
- Attack & Release: Soften the transient for an atmospheric pad, or adjust the release tail to let the ring decay naturally.
- Ambient Reverb: Dial in an expansive, built-in space to set a lush, hypnotic mood.
Whether you are scoring a whimsical film cue, working on an indie game soundscape, or layering acoustic elements over synth pads, MG Kitchen Lights delivers a highly responsive performance that feels completely tactile. It represents my dedication to creating intuitive, realistic, and expressive tools that let you focus entirely on your music.
Please Note: This free instrument requires the Full Version of Native Instruments Kontakt 6.7+.
